My name is Floris Kotze, and I’m a recovering adventure motorcyclist — many years in the saddle, countless miles of gravel road covering the length and breadth of South Africa, and not nearly enough sense to stop.
But it was on the tar road that it happened — stuck in traffic in Newlands, Cape Town, when I first laid eyes on those beautiful Cape Sidecar Adventures sidecars. One look at them rumbling past and I was smitten. So I did what any sensible person would do: tracked them down online and begged for training until they let me join the team. That was a long time ago. And yet — I still remember my first time taking clients out like it was yesterday. Picture-perfect day, Atlantic Seaboard views, and my sidecar, “Olive,” popping and banging along one of the best roads in the Western Cape, purring like she owned it.
As they say, you never forget your first time. I certainly haven’t — and honestly, every ride out still feels like the first time.
